Value PlusŪ FAQs

The exciting new Value PlusŪ line of seed corn is not just another seed corn product. It is nutritionally enhanced.

What does this mean to growers and why should they change some of their corn production method?

Very simply, Value PlusŪ seed corn has a higher energy (oil & protein) level than has ever come to the market before. Oil has 225% more energy than starch or sugar. It takes energy to make energy. This is not a product you would plant on poor or improperly balanced soils. Plan to have good soil nutrition available during the grain fill time when the energy demand is at its peak.

What is the best population level?

Value PlusŪ genetics have a very flexible ear size in almost all varieties. It has the capability to increase yield by flexing the ear rather than having to add plants with a determinate ear. We recommend 24-28,000 final populations in most cases. Under well managed, high fertility or irrigated ground, one could increase to 30,000 final populations.

Will Value PlusŪ seed corns have as high of energy levels if I have a frost or drought?

Actually, they will have a higher concentration of oil making them ideal for silage in the northern markets. The oil, in particular, is in the embryo of the grain (the white portion in the center) and since the embryo is the first to develop in the kernel, it will produce the oil first and then develop the starch and other components last. Likewise in a drought, the embryo is first to develop making the oil (energy) the first components added to the kernel.

Is the seedling vigor of Value PlusŪ as good as what I am presently planting?

Seedling vigor, sometimes referred to as cold tolerance, is shown to be as good as or better than what is currently on the market today.

Note: seedling or early vigor is usually directly related to the seed genetics and the stress experienced in the production fields the year of production. Mechanical damage, inconsistent drying temperatures and mishandling of the seed in any way can reduce seedling vigor.

Should I be careful when drying Value PlusŪ grain?

Inconsistent or high temperatures (over 120š) will reduce the nutritional value of any grain corn. Since Value PlusŪ grain has more nutritional value to begin with, you have more to lose. For best results, we recommend drying under low heat, high volume air. Our experience shows that the rate of dry-down post harvest does not vary much from the rate of drydown on #2 yellow dent corn.
